Cochinas Shines as a Sex-Forward Comedy About an Adult Video Store
What:
They say sex is the oldest business in this world. But what if sex is your family business?
Nines, a conservative housewife who lives a daily domestic routine that borders on unspectacular in 1990’s Valladolid, Spain. Her breadwinner husband falls into a sudden coma, leaving her alone to manage the family business: a modest video rental store named Dorothy.
Within a day, she discovers her husband is in significant debt and has mortgaged her family’s resources to keep Dorothy afloat in the face of declining sales and his general managerial negligence.
Pushed to her psychological breaking point, she pivots in an unexpected direction after realizing Dorothy is simply unable to compete with the sleek new Blockbuster-style competition down the street. Porn, she decides, will be the new focal point of Dorothy, as it is the only genre that currently sells well in the store. Plus, customers will pay for a safe space to consume their favorite media.

Why:
This show is filled with raunchy hilarity. There’s a lot of nudity and sex jokes. Nines’ reserved demeanor makes her a perfect comedy conduit in this desparate endeavor to save her family’s livelihood.
Aided by Chon and Agus, the store’s eccentric employees, Nines must navigate this operation while concurrently serving and hiding it from her neighbors, who predictably have a range of reactions.
I recommend this show to any high intermediate learning. Just avoid watching it with your parents. (Unless you’re a very sex-positive family, in which case, kudos to you.)
How:
Cochinas has one season with 8 episodes (30 minutes each) and is currently available on Prime Video.
