Mexico’s Most Famous Musical Shines On Screen with a Dazzling Mini-Series Interpretation
What:
Have you ever been to an awkward funeral? Well, have you been to one where the deceased is revealed to have four lovers at once and they all find out during the procession?
That’s essentially what takes placed in Mentiras, La Serie based on the jukebox musical Mentiras, El Musical (2009) by José Manuel López Velarde, widely considered the most famous musical originating from Mexico.
Set in the 70’s and 80’s, the series revolves around four women: Daniela, Dulce, Yuri and Lupita, who meet at the funeral of Emmanuel Mijares.
As they become acquainted, they are shocked to find out that they were all concurrently romantic partners to Emmanuel without knowing. Even more, the circumstances of Emmanuel’s death cast suspicion on each woman as the possible culprit of his supposed murder. Through flashbacks and musical performances, each woman tells her version of their relationship and experiences. Soon, the pieces of the puzzle start coming together to form a picture full of surprises.

Why:
Simply put, the songs and performances are incredible. They are so catchy and well-composed.
Further, the cinematography and set design is dazzlingly colorful. It actually reminds me of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters by Paul Schrader with the way the show adeptly weaves between different timelines using dreamy set designs and pairing each woman with a bold color.
Oddly, Emmanuel, while ultimately an unfaithful womanizer, is surprisingly charming and has a sympathetic backstory, making each relationship’s arc more meaningful than your typical scandalous tryst.
I have not seen the original musical, but my understanding from online reviews is the series takes some liberties in changing plot points and cutting songs to fit the medium. Still, it shines as its own version and I cannot wait to see a live version of the musical one day.
Overall, this is an excellent show for an upper intermediate/advanced learner. I highly recommend it as your next watch.
How:
Mentiras, La Serie has one season with eight episodes (30-35 minutes each) available to stream via Prime Video in the USA.
