CUALCA! (2012)

This Hit Web Series From Argentina Packs Short but Mighty Punches

What:

Searching for a quick, high-quality dopamine hit? Look no further than CUALCA!

Created by Malena Pichot in 2012, CUALCA! is a revered web sketch series from Argentina that features a primary comedy group of five actors, including Pichot, who play a variety of different characters from Buenos Aires in each absurd scenario.

Episodes run two to five minutes and consist of either one skit or a few mini-skits. Because of this format, the series does not have a strict continuous narrative plot, meaning that while some characters reappear in episodes, the exact chronological watch order of the individual sketches is not necessary to enjoy the show.

Why:

This series is for you if you enjoy the millennial web sketch era of the early- and mid-2010’s. Think Broad City and Insecure before they converted to television series. Consequently, the comedy can best be described as a mix of satire, absurdity, and feminist comedy.

These are sharp, bite-sized bits of Spanish you can easily enjoy, and I highly recommend this show to any upper-intermediate or advanced learner.

How:

CUALCA! is fully available for free on Malena Pichot’s Youtube channel. You do not need to watch the series in chronological order due to its skit format. That said, all episodes are in chronological order on the CualcaParaTodos Youtube channel, though offered in worse video quality than Malena Pichot’s channel for the first 4 episodes. I recommend searching these episode titles on Pichot’s CUALCA! playlist and watching them in better quality.
